President Research Projects: Lapbooks

We are a little behind in writing since the south shut down last week due to snow. We made up some time this week by being able to finish our research lapbooks.

To review a little, students were allowed to choose between 3 presidents: Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln. (the 3 that we had the most materials for in our school's library)

Students were then to use the library books and the Internet to research their chosen president, looking closely at these topics:

You can check out {THIS} post to look at the website that our school's librarian created for our students' research!
Students took their information and put them into mini-books, then glued them into folders to create lapbooks.
I am very impressed with how some of their lapbooks turned out! My students did a great job navigating Google and Wikipedia (not the best for college research, but just fine for our purposes!) to find their information. I told them that bonus information about the topics should be included for extra points.

Here are some of their finished products:

I used some of these websites to find mini-books for our project. Most of them were free!

Next step in our President Projects- brochures! Taking the information from our research and lapbooks to create an informational brochure on our chosen president. It's going to be epic!

Shout out- Lapbook Queen

I am pleased to announce there's a new Lapbook Queen in town! I thought I was doing well with our landforms lapbook, but I was blown out of the water.

All hail the Lapbook Queen, Mrs. Ritchey!

You might remember Mrs. Ritchey from last year when she was going by the name Ms. Gillem.

When I started working through the lapbook for 3rd grade, Mrs. Ritchey saw what I was doing and asked about it. I showed her my binder of mini books and foldables and she was impressed! (My binder is not pictured here. It would be embarassed to be seen next to hers.)

Ritchey decided that lapbooks were the way to go with her ESOL students. She currently works with grades K-3 and they create lapbooks every 2 weeks, all based on what they are learning during their small group time.

Here are some examples of what her students have created so far!

Ritchey, I bow down to your lapbook awesomeness!

Long live the Queen!
(until I knock her off the throne. I gotta go work on my binder!)

Science lapbooks

We're done with our lapbooks for chapter 3- Organisms of Long Ago. I posted on Third Grade Thinkers about the different mini books we would be making. Today I got to send the finished products home, graded and ready to be shared with parents. Here are the students who made a perfect 100%.

The lapbooks were graded using a rubric. Each mini book was worth 3pts, the entire lapbook was 36 points. The topics covered were:
 Chapter 3 vocabulary
Fossils
Geologist, Paleontologist
Rocks and minerals
Endangered and extinct animals
4 layers of rock
3 categories of rocks
Desert landforms
Animal adaptations
Erosion

Great job, all of my students! We will make more lapbooks this year since my students really enjoyed the activity.
