Mini Math Lesson- Ways to Make Numbers

I know we have done this before, but mostly we have focused on Fact Families. This was the first time I introduced this skill, and I think my students did pretty well!

Here's a video to show you what we're working on!

This is a great skill to practice at home! Using dimes and pennies also helps with money sense.

Now, since the workbook has us using unifix cubes, I thought I'd show the skill another way as well.

First, we start with a number. Let's use 42. I tell my students to find the numbers in the tens and ones places by saying the number S...L...O...W...L...Y... try it! Forty....two. So, now we have two numbers, 40 and 2!

Four sets of 10, and two 1s.

Next, we move one of the 10s to the 1s side and recount!

I point out to the kids that the answer doesn't change, just the numbers. We didn't get rid of anything, we just moved things around!

Move and count again!

And again!

And one more time!

My students did much better when we were working with money, which makes me happy! Let's face it, my students need to be able to work with money in the real world more than they need to work with unifix cubes!

I hope this helps!
