I've been saving this video for just the perfect time. You would have thought the perfect time would have been on Talk Like a Pirate Day, but you'd be wrong.
Next week third grade starts their study of adjectives, descriptive words, to enhance their writing.
Well, I don't know about you, but when I think of adjectives, I automatically think of underpants!

You might remember our new Assistant Principal from {THIS} previous post. When I asked if she would be interested in being our newest reader, she jumped at the chance! (I think she misses the classroom a little, so this made her day.) :)
I am so excited to announce that the BIG PLANS is BACK this year! It kind of went on hiatus last year, but it was definitely something I wanted to do again.
Of course, we started by reading the book Big Plans by Bob Shea.
Then I had my students help me create their own Big Plans poster of professions that interested them. (Yes, one of my students really did say Evil Master Mind. After talking to him, he really wants to be like the crazy scientist on Phineas and Pherb. Seriously, the student is totally sweet.)
As you can see, I have my work cut out for me this year. :)
We also created a chart of questions we would like to have answered about the professions we chose. The chart below is the one I remade. The first one was not as neat. I also added a question at the end that you won't see asked in this "episode".
Now, Ms. Harper in the office knows to send professionals who enter the building my way, just for this reason. My students love meeting new people and getting to know them. :)
So, imagine our happiness when who should show up at our door, but a representative for the Boy Scouts of America!
(Ok, maybe he was going around to all the classes, but he agreed to come back to our room when he was done!)

The past 2 weeks, we have been learning about Living and Nonliving, Animal Classifications, and Life Cycles.
As a quick, and fun, assessment of student learning, I had my students create mini-posters about one of the life cycles.
Students got to choose between the frog and butterfly life cycle. After creating their posters, my little soldiers had to present their posters to the class. I was very impressed with how well they did for their first presentations.
I had some colleagues come by after school to choose their favorites. Here are the winners!

It's kind of... odd... to think that the kids I am currently teaching weren't even a twinkle in their parents' eyes when 9/11 happened. I remember where I was, and I'm sure everyone who was alive 13 years ago can identify the exact moment when they heard the news.
I don't want to go into great detail, but the fact of September 11, 2001 should still move Americans today. So, even though my students are currently living in a post-9/11 world, they need to know about an important piece of our recent history.
This video from Nick News is moving, informational, and kid-friendly. I've shown it to my students every year since it's airing on the 10 year anniversary.
