BIG PLANS- Community Catalyst for Mozilla

As you probably saw on previous posts {HERE} and {HERE}, Lindsey Frost was a volunteer reader during our Read Across America week. She also allowed us to interview her for our BIG PLANS segment!

Lindsey Frost (lindsey_in_cha if you're on Twitter) is a Community Catalyst for Mozilla. When we asked her what that meant in layman's terms, she said she was a community builder for Mozilla, which is a non-profit organization.

Lindsey is awesome, and I mean that sincerely. She works hard here in Chattanooga making sure that we stay technologically advanced. Every technology (in education) based activity I've attended here in the city has had her hand in it somewhere. She. Rocks.

Big Plans- School Patrol Officer

Ms. Telisa's not just a wonderful cosmetologist, she's also a school patrol officer! (aka- crossing guard) When she arrived at the Hills, she was still in her uniform, so we interviewed her as a school patrol officer first. I posted the cosmetologist interview first since I knew my students would be looking for it. :)

So, here's Ms. Telisa as a school partol officer!

Big Plans- Cosmetologist

We in General Delk's Army had a wonderful surprise today.
Mr. Evans, who loves this segment on the blog, found a cosmetologist for us to interview!! Ms. Telisa is the woman who does Mr. Evans' daughter's hair. I called her up and she was thrilled to get to come in! (and we were thrilled to have her!)

But that wasn't even the best part. When Ms. Telisa came in she told us she isn't just a cosmetologist, she's also a school patrol officer! That's right, we got a 2-for-1!! She was wonderful and allowed us to interview her for both professions.

Big Plans- Tennessee State Representative

It was a BIG day today at the Hills. It started normally with reading, small groups, and writing, then who should come through our door?
Why, Mr. Evans, Ms. Newson, and Representative Favors!

You read that right! Tennessee representative JoAnne Favors came to the Hills just to check us out! (Well, to check out the school, not just General Delk's Army.) Imagine our happiness when she agreed to being interviewed!

As always, I explained that this is part of our BIG PLANS segment on our blog and I showed her our BIG PLANS poster.

I had explained to my students the importance of Rep. Favor's position, so I can only assume that they must have been in awe and a little shy. That's the only reason I can think of for their being so quiet when I started filming. (Goodness knows they're never that quiet any other time.)   :)

Big Plans- School Nurse

It took a lot of arm twisting, but we got our very own Nurse Burney to come and let us interview her!

The conversation went like this:

Nurse Burney- Mrs. Delk, can I come talk to your class about germs and washing hands?
Me- Sure. Can we interview you about your job while you're there?
Nurse Burney- Sure.

I'm a hard-core negotiator like that. :)

So, Nurse Burney came and talked to us about the importance of washing our hands, the proper way to sneeze and cough so as not to share germs, and why we shouldn't be doing things like sucking thumbs or wiping our eyes/faces all the time.

In return, Nurse Burney answered our BIG PLANS questions:

Big Plans- Girl Scouts Community Development Manager

Ever since we interviewed a representative from Boy Scouts, my girls have been wondering when we would get to talk to someone from the Girl Scouts. Well, Monday was the day! We had a visit from Kelsey Kinzy, who is the Community Development Manager for the Girl Scouts in this area.
Kelsey came in to talk to my girls and of course we had to ask if we could interview her!

One of the things Kelsey shared with us is that, not only does she work for the Girl Scouts, but she was a member of Girl Scouts for 16 years!! That's dedication! That tells me that Girl Scouts must be doing some awesome things to be able to keep their members for so long.

Big Plans- Boy Scouts District Executive

I am so excited to announce that the BIG PLANS is BACK this year! It kind of went on hiatus last year, but it was definitely something I wanted to do again.

Of course, we started by reading the book Big Plans by Bob Shea.

Then I had my students help me create their own Big Plans poster of professions that interested them.
(Yes, one of my students really did say Evil Master Mind. After talking to him, he really wants to be like the crazy scientist on Phineas and Pherb. Seriously, the student is totally sweet.)

As you can see, I have my work cut out for me this year. :)
 We also created a chart of questions we would like to have answered about the professions we chose. The chart below is the one I remade. The first one was not as neat. I also added a question at the end that you won't see asked in this "episode".

Now, Ms. Harper in the office knows to send professionals who enter the building my way, just for this reason.  My students love meeting new people and getting to know them. :)

So, imagine our happiness when who should show up at our door, but a representative for the Boy Scouts of America!

(Ok, maybe he was going around to all the classes, but he agreed to come back to our room when he was done!)

BIG PLANS- Police Officer

I am very excited to bring you this segment of BIG PLANS today! Since the beginning of the year, my class has wanted to interview a police officer- and we finally did!

Sergeant Jones is an officer with the Chattanooga Police Dept. He specifically works with the SWAT team.

Sergeant Jones originally came to read to my class during Dr. Seuss week, but we were in the middle of Boot Camp for TCAP. He was nice enough to agree to coming back later in the day for my students to get their interviews! So, here we go!!
