Charlotte's Web- Character Fact and Opinion Activity

Before the weekend starts and I post chapter 9 in the morning, I wanted to share a fun Fact and Opinion activity! Third grade has been working on fact and opinion, and I know second grade works in the skill as well.

In the activity, students matches fact and opinion phrases to the character described. Students then have to decide which are facts and which are opinions. They must also find a page from the text where they find "proof" of their facts.

There are 2 versions of this activity. One is regular black and white. The other is color coded to the character.

Let me know what you think in the comments section!

Twas the last day before break...

...and all through the school, not a student was complaining. They followed the rules!

The classes were snug in their classrooms with care, in hopes that left over sweets from parties were there.

Ok, enough of that. I had a smaller class today due to some students choosing to start their vacation early. (Can't say as I blame them!) The rest of us enjoyed a Cub Cash event where students paid out of their Cub Cash accounts for the chance to throw a pie in a teacher's face. Don't worry, this face was safe behind the microphone acting as MC.

In the classroom, we worked on math before starting an art activity- wreath making.

Here are some finished products!

On a side note, today was tacky Christmas shirt day for the teachers. The 3rd grade team got together after school to create ours. Check out how awesomely tacky we look!

But the prize really went to Mr. Clark. Here he is posing with Ms. Chastain.

It's the pants that complete the outfit. :)

Happy Holidays everyone!

We are studying sequencing as our reading focus. Part of sequencing is being able to take someone through the steps of an activity. We talked about being able to give someone explicate directions in order for that person to be able to accomplish their goal.

In this case, we have 3 goals in mind:

1. How to Build a Snowman

2. How to Earn a Christmas Party

3. How to Decorate a Christmas tree

Here are the teams working on their directions using ordinal words.

How to Build a Snowman

How to Earn a Christmas Party

How to Decorate a Christmas tree

If you were wondering how you were going to manage the holidays, I hope our videos helped! :)

Happy Holidays everyone!

Charlotte's Web Chapter 8

Special delivery coming your way! Today's chapter is being read to you by the one... the only.... Mr. Russell!
(crickets chirping in the background)

Mr. Russell taught 1st grade last year and was a great member of the CHES team. You might remember him from these posts:

Mr. Russell as Crazy Wacky Scientist

Mr. Russell's Celebrity Story Saturday

Well he came to the Hills for a visit today, so I forced him... er... asked him nicely to read for everyone in blogger land.

So, here is Mr. Russell sharing his excellent reading skills with everyone!

Charlotte's Web Chapter 7

You'll never guess who's the guest reader for this chapter!

This girl!

It's short and sweet, so I agreed to read! I might have messed up a little, but that's the trouble with not knowing how to edit. Just pretend it doesn't happen.

BIG PLANS- Read 20

Clifton Hills is fortunate to have such a caring community of helpers who make sure our students are introduced to enriching literature. We have had the Read 20 program as part of Hamilton Co. since 2006 and I know my students look forward to being visited by the Read 20 bookmobile!

When Mr. Payne visited on Thursday, my students insisted that I ask him if he would like to be interviewed by our class. Of course he said yes. Who wouldn't like to be featured here at General Delk's Army?

So, here we go!

1. What is the highest degree needed for this profession?

  2. What are some specific classes or skills you had to work on?

  3. What does your work day look like?

 4. Do you use any special equipment in your field?

 5. What specific position do you hold in your company/ job?

 6. How long did you have to practice before you got your job?

 7. What is the starting salary for your profession?

Thank you, Mr. Payne! We look forward to seeing you again!

Charlotte's Web- BONUS ACTIVITY!

I know what you're thinking... "Two posts in one day?! How did I get so lucky?" Well my friends I'm just a sucker for a good character analysis activity. Along with my posting Chapter 6 and its activity today, I thought I'd share the Character Adjectives activity I created.

One activity is color coded for kiddos who might need extra help, the other is regular black print.

And please leave a comment letting me know what you think of the activities so far!

Charlotte's Web Chapter 5

Ready for the next chapter? Here goes! Ms. Toles brings you chapter 5 in two installments.

Read 20- The Heart and the Bottle

Stuart Payne from Read 20 came to visit our 3rd graders today to share with them his love of books. You might remember him from last year. Check out {THIS} post.

This year he shared the book The Heart and the Bottle. I gotta say, this book was interesting. Of course, Mr. Payne showed students how to properly read the story; asking questions about the text, making inferences from the illustrations, forming a character analysis of the main character. It was wonderful! The story was a real heart-wrencher, so have Kleenex ready!

Thank you, Mr. Payne!

**Students and Parents, check in Saturday to see our BIG PLANS interview of Mr. Payne!**

 Some Pig

 Metacognition Moment
A little poetic license used on this one...
