Day 7- ABC I like me!

Who knew that an ABC book could make my class feel so good? This morning we dived into another ABC book titled ABC I Like Me! It was about 3 animals who used the alphabet to tell the world all the things they knew how to do. I found that my students didn't want to be out done by some animals, so they made regular interjections like, "I can do that!" and "Me too!" As it turns out, I have a very talented group of soldiers! Much more talented than a group of animals! ;)

But I don't want my students to feel that they have to constantly perform for others to feel important. So, we also read the book I Like Myself! (If your student was here last year, he or she should already have this book at home. It was a gift from our Read 20 program from last year.) The book is about a girl who doesn't care what others think; she likes herself just fine!

We used a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the two books.

The kids liked each of the books, but I could tell they liked I Like Myself just a little bit more. I don't know if it's the fact that it was a rhyming book (you gotta love a good rhyming book!) or the great illustrations (one had the girl with purple polka-dotted lips) but the kids really seemed to connect well with it. I take that as a good sign; the kids appreciate a book that encourages children to think well of themselves, no matter what the rest of the World thinks.

I have good news about the SECRET PROJECT... we're almost done! We finished the ABC list on our board. My brilliant soldiers thought of 26 animals, with only minimal help from outside sources. (Thank you Mrs. Amanda and Mrs. Watson!)

It's all typed up and ready for some illustrations. Tomorrow the kids will illustrate the book, we'll cut, glue and laminate, then ABBRA-KADABRA!! We will magically have an ABC book made by General Delk's Soldiers!
I'll make sure to have my camera ready to get the surprised look on Mr. Evan's face!
